Die Seitenbesitzer erkannten flott den Wert einer nahmen Listung in den Resultaten und recht bald fand man Behörde, die sich auf die Besserung spezialisierten. In den Anfängen bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Aufnahme oft bezüglich der Übertragung der URL der passenden Seite an die vielfältigen Internet Suchmaschinen. Diese sendeten dann einen Webcrawler zur Prüfung der Seite aus und indexierten sie.[1] Der Webcrawler lud die Homepage auf den Webserver der Suchmaschine, wo ein zweites Angebot, der sogenannte Indexer, Infos herauslas und katalogisierte (genannte Ansprüche, Links zu weiteren Seiten). Die damaligen Varianten der Suchalgorithmen basierten auf Informationen, die mit den Webmaster selber vorgegeben wurden, wie Meta-Elemente, oder durch Indexdateien in Internet Suchmaschinen wie ALIWEB. Meta-Elemente geben eine Gesamtübersicht via Thema einer Seite, aber registrierte sich bald heraus, dass die Einsatz der Tipps nicht gewissenhaft war, da die Wahl der genutzten Schlüsselworte dank dem Webmaster eine ungenaue Beschreibung des Seiteninhalts widerspiegeln konnte. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in Meta-Elementen konnten so irrelevante Seiten bei individuellen Ausschau halten listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller verschiedene Fähigkeiten binnen des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu manipulieren, dass die Seite richtiger in Ergebnissen gefunden wird.[3] Da die frühen Suchmaschinen im WWW sehr auf Faktoren dependent waren, die bloß in den Koffern der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr anfällig für Straftat und Manipulationen im Ranking. Um vorteilhaftere und relevantere Vergleichsergebnisse in den Suchergebnissen zu erhalten, musste ich sich die Unternhemer der Search Engines an diese Rahmenbedingungen anpassen. Weil der Gelingen einer Search Engine davon abhängig ist, besondere Suchresultate zu den inszenierten Keywords anzuzeigen, konnten ungünstige Ergebnisse dazu führen, dass sich die User nach sonstigen Möglichkeiten zur Suche im Web umsehen. Die Auskunft der Internet Suchmaschinen vorrat in komplexeren Algorithmen für das Rangordnung, die Aspekte beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur schwer steuerbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin generierten mit „Backrub“ – dem Vorläufer von Suchmaschinen – eine Suchmaschine, die auf einem mathematischen Algorithmus basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Kanten gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus einfließen ließ.
