16-year-old arrested; deliberate taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass college taking pictures that would have included a bombing at Berkeley High School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division mentioned in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful system materials and threatening to commit against the law which is able to lead to loss of life or nice bodily injury.

Police said they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a student at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered parts to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital objects that may very well be used to create extra weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty safety remains a high precedence for the department," police said in an announcement. 

Particulars on whom the teenager was trying to recruit were not disclosed. Police said this case remains beneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the college's group that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing risk to its schools. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our customary observe, maintained shut contact with our BPD College Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we have been assured that this individual didn't pose an immediate risk to the Berkeley High School community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary motion towards the coed.
