College students stroll out of colleges in protest of gun violence

Days after at least 19 elementary school college students and two teachers had been killed in a mass shooting at an elementary college in Uvalde, Texas, college students at colleges across the country staged walkouts to protest gun violence.

In Michigan, students at Oxford High College, where a school shooting occurred in November, staged a walkout at 12 p.m. on Thursday. Four college students were killed in the shooting.

Students at Saugus High College in Santa Clarita, California, additionally walked out of class, in support of the nationwide gun safety movement. The college was the positioning of a shooting in November 2019, through which two college students have been killed.

College students also staged walkouts at schools in Port Washington, New York, and Falls Church, Virginia.

Student organizers say at least 600 college students walked out of Paul D. Schreiber Senior Excessive School in Port Washington earlier this afternoon.

Emma Janoff, an 11th grader at Schreiber and a member of 'College students Demand Motion', a national organization in opposition to gun violence, says she got energetic on gun control policy and school security following the 2018 Parkland Excessive College shooting.

"You see information on daily basis about children getting shot and other people your age dying and it is just incredibly unhappy and unbelievable, particularly to see like youngsters youthful and children my age," Janoff informed ABC News. "I cant imagine that being me; however it is imaginable as a result of it happens so usually."

The 17 year-old says her school's administration was in assist of the walkout and she or he hopes the over 200 deliberate demonstrations throughout the country send a transparent message that college students are a "united front."

A walkout could not necessarily change laws, Janoff said, however these actions show "college students are nonetheless united on this."

She stated that although most college students aren't sufficiently old to vote, they still want to see change and are keen to take measures to have their voices heard in politics.

"Students don't need to be quiet about it just because they are a child," Janoff mentioned.
