The policy, disclosed in leaked emails Musk despatched to Tesla's government workers Tuesday, was first reported by electric car information web site Electrek.

"Anyone who wishes to do distant work have to be in the workplace for a minimal (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. That is less than we ask of manufacturing unit workers," Musk wrote, adding that the office have to be the worker's primary workplace the place the other employees they commonly interact with are primarily based — "not a distant department office unrelated to the job duties."

Musk stated he would personally evaluate any request for exemption from the coverage, but that for the most half, "For those who don't present up, we will assume you have got resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) didn't respond to a request for touch upon the policy change, but Musk appeared to verify it in a tweet of his own early Wednesday when requested on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any additional comment to individuals who think coming into work is an antiquated concept?" Musk replied: "They should faux to work somewhere else."The policy is completely at odds with that of the other tech company Musk is making an attempt to buy, Twitter (TWTR), which has beforehand announced employees can proceed to work at home "without end" if they prefer. "Wherever you're feeling most productive and inventive is the place you will work and that features working from home full-time ceaselessly," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a word to Twitter's practically 100,000 employees in March, simply before Musk's interest in owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, however, that will not be the case. It's particularly essential that senior managers be seen within the workplace, Musk mentioned, including that was one of many reasons he primarily lived at the Tesla manufacturing unit in Fremont, California, when the company was struggling to extend production in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not carried out that, Tesla would way back have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are after all firms that do not require this, but when was the final time they shipped an ideal new product? It has been a while."

He added, "Tesla has and will create and truly manufacture the most thrilling and significant products of any firm on Earth," he added. "This won't occur by phoning it in."

Surveys show the vast majority of office workers want the choice to work at home. Since reopening workplaces following Covid-19 shutdowns, many firms beyond Twitter have announced increased flexibility for employees who wish to work remotely, partly as a technique to retain or entice expertise in a very tight labor market. However the world's richest person would not appear concerned about that dynamic.
