Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech giant mentioned its iconic music player has been replaced by different units, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising, said: "Today, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an incredible music experience throughout all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with assist for spatial audio - there is no better way to enjoy, uncover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the first MP3 player that might hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new category of digital music player that permits you to put your total music collection in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he mentioned on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the identical again."

Related MP3 players released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success because the iPod.
